Evaluation of College Magazine

This is my new amended Front cover of my college magazine, I have changed the copyrighted image of a pumpkin to an original image of a hallween party.

My task was to create a college magazine front cover and draft a contents page. I decided to call my magazine ‘Wyke Focus’ this was to show what the contents of the magazine were about (Wyke associated). This magazine had to represent this college in a very positive way and had to have appropriate stories. I thought of many ideas for mastheads, images, selling lines and planned out a draft of my front cover. I then had to do some research into the happenings at wyke and think of some ideas for my cover lines. I then compared 2 other college magazines; ‘GX magazine’ and ‘College Lifestyle’  this gave me ideas as to what is conventional and unconventional. It helped me realise how to make your magazine attractive to the chosen audience.
My college magazine uses many different forms of conventions such as putting a large bold masthead at the top of the front cover, I chose ‘Wyke Focus’ as this makes it clear as to what the magazine is actually about. I also chose to put the barcode at the bottom left hand corner of the front cover along with the price and college logo in the other corner. I used Purple and a yellowy green colour for my text as this represents Wyke college as it matches the Wyke logo. I put 2 more images along the left third of the front cover which is also a convention of a real magazine. The image of the girl on the laptop was taken to represent someone who is good at media, the other image of the pumpkin was to link in with the month (October) and the fact that there is a Halloween party nearby. I think my main image challenges forms and conventions of a real magazine because usually the model would be smiling but I decided to create a more peaceful image of somebody studying in the new grounds, I chose this photograph out of many because it promotes wyke in a more positive way that the other photos as it is a lot lighter and looks very attractive.
My magazine doesn’t really represent particular social groups but it does represent students in a different way to usual, it actually shows the student studying in a peaceful environment and not with friends and it doesn’t show any teachers this shows students in a different way it shows them actually working by themselves which is more true to life because student do have to study by themselves a lot.
The audience for my magazine is students mainly aged between 16 and 21 who live in Hull or the East Riding. This could also attract other students who don’t go to wyke who would like to know what the wyke lifestyle is like encase they decide to come to wyke in the future. The audience could also be staff at Wyke as they may want to know what’s going on at the college and what students are getting up to. Parents may also want to read this because they may want to know what there son/daughter is doing at college and what goes on whilst they are there.
I used many conventions to attract my audience such as using a bright bold masthead and using other images of goings on at the college. I also chose a bright picture and short snappy cover lines to attract other students to read it.
I used Adobe Photoshop to construct my front cover college magazine and draft of the contents page. I used a digital camera to take original images of students at Wyke college and chose which images out of the ones I took were best suited to the front cover of my magazine. When I chose my final picture I used image adjustments on photo shop to change the brightness and contrast of the photograph to make it look a lot brighter and more colourful. I created boxes to put the other images in and changed the colours and the fonts to make them represent wyke. I chose to change the colour of the box with the pumpkin in to black and changed the font and the font colour to red to make it represent Halloween as scary and sinister. I cut out a purple star and decided to change the colour to purple and put the text inside and used that as the main cover line. I think that my magazine was very simple to create and is looks very effective.
In comparison to the other two college magazines I analysed, I believe that my magazine is more like a college magazine than ‘GX magazine’ because it shows students in a more positive manor and is a lot more attractive and colourful, I think that this widens the range of audience. My magazine does not look as professional as ‘College lifestyle’ because ‘College lifestyle’ is more glossy were as my magazine looks as though a student has actually created it themselves and I think that this is more effective and will be more attractive to other students. I wanted to represent the college in a positive way and I believe I have done that as it shows success, education, happiness and positivity.

College magazine final front cover

This is my college magazine front cover. I think that my magazine is very conventional as it has a main image in the centre, the masthead is at the top, a main coverline and other coverlines. As you can see I have used the purple and green colours to match with the colours of the wyke logo. I think this is a good idea because these colours represent wyke and make the magzine look attractive. I have chosen to put the masthead at the top and made the font bold and very easy to read. I decided to put the main coverline in a star shape so that it is more visable and stands out against the background. The main image looks bright and colourful wich is attractive to people thinking of joining Wyke college. The audience for this magazine is mainly students at the college or parents wanting to know what goes on at Wyke. Staff could also be interested in this magazine. I think my magazine gives Wyke a very positive representation because of the colours chosen and the posative coverlines.

Choice of Images I had taken

I didnt choose this image because I thought that it didnt represent the college in a positive way, it looks dark and miserable and doesnt give good representation.

I chose not to use this photograph because you cannot tell that it has been taken in a college.

This photograph looks lighter and more welcoming but I didnt choose it because there was no space left for any other imagry and I thought it would be difficult to place the coverlines in certain places to make them stand out.

I was going to choose this image and put other images and coverlines in the left and right of the main image and leave the centre (the student) clear.

I decided to choose this photograph because there is alot more room to put a larger masthead and alot of space to put coverlines and other imagry on the front cover.

I decided to include this photograph on the front cover as the laptop represents media.

Contents page draft

This is my final draft of the contents page for my college magazine. I decided to spread the contents over a double page so that more information and extra imagry can be added to the main storylines to grab the readers attention. Although this draft is very basic I think that it is easily understandable and shows how I thought the contents page should be spread out.

Front cover draft

This is a basic draft of the front cover of my college magazine. I used this draft to create my final piece, I think that this is very conventional  and easy to read.

Analysis of two college magazines

Language: In ‘College lifestyle’ the masthead is very bold and yellow; the main image covers some of the masthead this shows that the magazine is confident it will still be recognised. The cover lines are at both left and right of the front cover. The main cover line is slightly bigger than the others. Some of the text is the same yellow colour as the masthead to make it stand out. The background is a dark gray which makes the yellow and white text appear more colourful. The main image looks very professional and looks like it has been taken in a studio because of the lighting effects. I think that ‘College lifestyle’ is an American college magazine. The ‘GX magazine’ has a very short masthead and is written in bold red writing which symbolises danger. The main image is very clever as it looks very rebellious which links with the colour of the masthead. You could tell everything about the people in this image because of what they are wearing and their dress sense. The main cover lines on the front page are written in white text but I think that they would stand out better on a darker background because this would have given the text more dominance; this makes this front cover look unprofessional. The cover lines are all made sure they do not cover any of the models faces and have a short simple explanation underneath each one. There is another image of a girl which shows this magazine is for both genders. This image is less natural and looks as though the girl is posing for the photograph.

Institution: College lifestyle’ is aimed at people aged 18-24. It is an upscale, full colour glossy publication containing stunning photographs, striking visual imagery, in-depth features, articles, columns, and editorials about topics that appeal to the youth market. This magazine is the only one of its kind distributed in outlets across the Caribbean, USA, and Canada and worldwide on their website. ‘GX magazine’ is aimed at people aged 16 and above. It offers the ‘GX factor’ which would make people who like singing interested in buying the magazine. Staff at the college may also be interested in this magazine if they are curious as to what students get up to and what the college has to offer.

Ideology: The ideology of the magazine ‘College Lifestyle’ is to promote college culture and the student lifestyle. It also promotes the mobile the blackberry as it is in one of the cover lines along with promoting the new dancehall at that particular college. The ideology used in ‘GX magazine’ is different as the main picture promotes having fun at college and not to take it too seriously it also has news about that particular college, this magazine will be more like my college magazine than ‘College lifestyle’.

Audience: The audience of ‘College lifestyle’ is mainly 16-21 year olds who are either attending or thinking of attending a college. This particular issue looks as though it is aimed mainly at male students because the colours used to create the front cover are very masculine. The figure in the main image symbolises as student because he has books in his hands. I think that ‘GX magazine’ is also aimed at young adults aged 16-21, this is shown by using young adults as the main focus of the main image, although the cover lines don’t really give us much clue to what age group this magazine is aimed at. The college staff may also be interested in reading this magazine so that they can see what’s happening around the college campus. I think this magazine appeals to both male and female.

Representation: The representation used in ‘College lifestyle’ is very positive and the model used in the main image is holding academic books which promotes education. He is also looks like a good role model to students and because of his race he is representing ethnicity and equal right within the college. The representation used in ‘GX magazine’ is not as positive as ‘College lifestyle’ it is only half positive, the main image represents the college in a negative way because of the way the band are mucking around on the stairs, this also represents people in bands to be rebellious. Yet the other photograph represents the college in a positive way because it shows that this college has talent as the image is of a girl who won the ‘GX factor’ looks like a model student and is dressed formally. This proves that the college is proud of its achievements and makes other young talents come forward. I am going to make my magazine represent Wyke College in a positive manor.

College Magazine

Outlining the brief:

I have been asked to create a magazine front cover and draft of a contents page for a college magazine. Because it is a college magazine we must use key concepts of the college. Before creating this project I have to create a mock up of the layout and contents page to show our progress. I have to use my own original ideas and take my own digital photographs to manipulate.
